Ali is the most famous boxer of all time. I would say the closest boxer to his popularity is Sugar ray robinson.

Yeah, Ali is the most popular boxer of all time along with :

- Mike Tyson

- Oscar De La Hoya

These three boxers are so Legendary and well known all over the world.

These names are also very popular and known worldwide, but not as popular as those three :

- Joe Louis

- Rocky Marciano

- Sugar Ray Leonard

- Manny Pacquiao

- Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Easily. Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan once held the distinction of "Most Recognized Face on Planet Earth". One other boxer held this distinction before them. Muhammad ALI. Some others have come close. Joe Louis, Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather, Ray Leonard, Oscar de la Hoya, even Manny Pacquiao. But none of them were the equal of ALI in terms of popularity.

Several boxers were as famous as Muhammad Ali in the USA including; John L Sullivan, Jack Dempsey & Joe Louis [who was obviously loved more in his time than Ali in the 60=70's].

Remember; what is popular today may be forgotten tomorrow.

With that said; few people had Ali's global fame, i don't think even the great Joe Louis had Ali's fame.

The reason Ali was so famous is because of his controversial ideals.

Ali was the best heavyweight boxer of his time & he promoted himself very well, because of this he was famous in the Americas.

Ali, the most famous American athlete of his time, refused to fight the Vietkong & criticized USA racism, because of this he was famous in east Eurasia [unlike any American boxer EVER], in the dead middle of the cold war Ali had exhibitions in Moscow!; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06R4UVpkKtg

Muhammad Ali was also a muslim, thus [believe it or not] he was famous in the middle east & Africa [thus the crowd cheered for him against Foreman in Zaire].

Ali made major fights in the Phillipines, Africa & Europe while most all time greats either stayed in New York or in Las Vegas.

Only a few politicians have this kind of fame, but most are forgotten. In this last century men like Stalin, Hitler, Roosevelt & Mao may be as famous [but many people today don't know who they are yet they know who Ali is].

Obama is famous now but he will likely be forgotten by the general public like many previous presidents.

'

Some say Michael Jordan surpassed Ali's fame, but Jordan was mostly famous in the Americas, the west & some parts of Africa. East Europeans, like Russians, know Ali, but Jordan never had that kind of fame in this region.

Muhammad Ali is a global figure thus he was chosen to light the Olympic torch.

Ali and Tyson are by far the two most famous boxers of all time. You could go anywhere in the world and ask some random person to name a boxer, and it'd be one or both of those two.

You can't say that for any other fighter IMO.

Muhammad Ali is the most popular boxer of all time, But other boxers as foreman, Johnson, joe, Marciano and sugar ray with so many others are still popular. The most feared boxer of all time who put fear in his opponents is the ferocious legend Mike Tyson.

Most definitely, especially in his time when he was more famous and popular than the most powerful leaders on earth including the Pope, the presidents/prime ministers/chairman of the USA, the Soviet Union and Red China and the most raved about musical/cultural icons of the time as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles! Imagine the great Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and other noted showbiz personalities disguising themselves as technicians/work crew just to get close to the ring side and see him in one of his biggest fights in the 60s. Ali also has a big shopping mall in Quezon City, Metro Manila, capital of the Philippines that was named after him (Ali Mall ) which is still a very popular commercial center till today. Ali simply transcended boxing and sports like no other man before and after him.

He sure is. However, there are a ton of other boxers that aren't far behind Ali in global and historical popularity. Guys like Tyson, Marciano, Dempsey, Chavez, Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Louis and Pacquiao are also very popular among the globe but none of them surpass Ali in historical and global popularity.

Yes, especially during his prime, when he was the most recognizable face in the planet. He was more popular than the US President and other world leaders during his time.
