question about the Michael Moorer vs George Foreman heavyweight title fight..?

my question is why/how was this fight even made? how was this a good fight for Moorer? Moorer had just won the championship (WBA & IBF) from Holyfield and didn't look good doing it, i scored it a draw on my card, and he chooses a 45 year old George Foreman for his first title defense? Foreman's prior bout was a loss to Tommy Morrison. even if Moorer had won the fight, who would really care? he would have beaten up an old man, which is what he was doing until the 10th round. why didn't he go after Lennox Lewis (WBC champ) for a unification bout? in all these years i still don't see why Moorer and Teddy Atlas gave George a shot at the title, he had little to gain and everyhing to lose.

Almost everyone that was physically present to witness the Holyfield Moorer fight on April 22, 1994, believed that Holyfield was robbed of his title { even fighting with one arm and a dangerous blockage to his left ventrical }

Holyfield lost the fight essentially by JERRY ROTH'S erronious scoring in the 2nd round in which Holyfield LEVELED MOORER . But Roth called the round 10-10 Even because he reasoned that Moorer "landed more blows". UNBELIEVEABLE. The Heavyweight Champion of the World had just knocked down the challenger like a Bowling Pin. And a "judge" decided NOT to give the champ that scored the knockdown the round because the challenger "touched him more times " AS IF IT WERE PING PONG!. Old school boxing purists who watched it considered it a MOCKERY! It was a travesty of scoring in perhaps the single worst scored round in Heavyweight Championship history. EVERYONE from George Foreman to Larry Merchant to Jim Lampley to Harold Ledderman to James Brown ALL believed that Roth had scored the 2nd round neglegently. Larry Merchant stated that at NO TIME in history had a Heavyweight Champion not be awarded the round in which he cleanly knocks a challenger down, without getting knocked down himself. Merchant could not believe that ROTH'S TERRIBLE ROUND 2 SCORING would actually decide the Heavyweight Championship of the World { The other two judges BOTH awarded Evander the second round. IF ROTH HAD EVEN SCORED THE ROUND 10-9, EVANDER WOULD HAVE KEPT HIS TITLE WITH A "MAJORITY DRAW" Foreman actually went as far as to imply that a dirty deal went down saying that "The Duvas had too many pieces of paper in too many pockets".

The Duvas threatened to sue HBO and specifically George! { George discusses the whole terrible incident in his autobiography "By George" } George's post fight comments WERE COMPLETELY EDITED OUT in the rebroadcast to appease the Duvas and Moorer.

Two weeks later at the Lennox Lewis-Phil Jackson fight on May 6, HBO had Moorer on as a guest. Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant were instructed by HBO to apologize to Moorer to avoid the lawsuit.......BUT GEORGE DEFIANTLY AND COURAGEOUSLY STOOD HIS GROUND! { Moorer was seated next to Lampley for about 5 minutes. During that time, Foreman could be seen sitting 3 chairs away with his arms folded in disgust.}

Holyfield had a rematch clause in the contract but the Left Ventrical crises left him in a severe cardiac state. The most distinguished medical center in America, The Mayo Clinic discovered a HOLE in Evander's heart. He was forced to retire because to fight on in their words "could be fatal" { Evander's heart would later be healed by the Lord, although naysayers in denial claimed that the most prestigious clinic in America had made a "misdiagnosis". } Some people NEED a non spiritual explanation. But Evander would proclaim his healing to all in the following months }

SO NOW TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION

Since Moorer HIMSELF HAD BEEN THE NUMBER 1 CONTENDER BY BOTH THE WBA AND THE IBF. THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATELY RANKED NUMBER ONE CONTENDER TO DEAL WITH ONCE HE BECAME THE WBA AND IBF CHAMPION.

Since Moorer wanted NO PART of a unification bout with Lennox Lewis { what Holyfield had been actively pursuing } that left Moorer's options open to face basically ANYONE he wanted to in a "voluntary defense". George called promoter Bob Arum and asked him to pursue a shot at Moorer. Arum had agreed with George that Evander had been robbed. Arum began negotiating with the Duvas for George to get a shot.

The Duvas KNEW that George was a HUGE NAME and that EVERYONE would tune in to see the big guy get one more shot!

They ALSO BELIEVED that Foreman was a shot fighter. He had not fought in a year and a half. And in THAT FIGHT, in June of 93, he had lost to Tommy Morrison . Morrison, then immediately got HIS reputation tarnished badly by suffering a 1 round knockout to an unknown fighter named Michael Bent. So Geoge's loss to Tommy was viewed by SOME as a sign that both George and Tommy were media overrated buffoons.

And essentially in a nutshell, the Duvas and Moorer believed that fighting George would bring in BIG MONEY with VERY LITTLE RISK.

HOW VERY VERY VERY WRONG THEY WERE!!!!!

Michael Moorer had just won the title in his fight before George Foreman and this was considered a relatively safe title defense. George had a few successful comeback fights but had lost to anybody of any significance. Lennox Lewis had was knocked out two months earlier by Oliver McCall so Moorer really didn't have the option of fighting him at that time even if he wanted to.

They gave George Foreman a shot because it was a fight that was sell-able at the time 45 year old former Champion gets one last crack at the Heavyweight Championship. Its in a way similar to Rocky 6 Moorer is the champion that nobody likes and George is the old Under-Dog that everybody is cheering for. Moorer isn't the 1st fighter to use an aging fighter for his name on a resume this time it just back fired.

Moorer was supposed to use Foreman as a stepping stone to set up a possible bigger fight with Lewis. It was a plan that had backfired for the Moorer camp. Actually, it was great to see Big George champ again.

your right. i remember Michael Moorer telling HBO's Jim Lampley in an interview that he wasn't interested in a unification fight with Lennox Lewis at the moment, why not?! or could it be that he was afraid to risk the titles against Lennox? he barely got passed a hurt Evander Holyfield to win the title. George Foreman was still a popular name in 1994, and i guess they (Moorer & Atlas) wanted to cash in with an "easy" title defense. but i do agree that George foreman didn't deserve a title shot.

It would have been a great fight sir! Here is my breakdown of each fighter and their career: James J. Jeffries Won: 18 Lost: 1 Draws: 2 Kayo's: 15 World Heavyweight Champ from 1899-1905 with 8 title defenses. Best wins vs Joe Choynski, Bob Fitzsimmons, James J. Corbett, Tom Shakey. You have to forget about the Johnson fight in which he came out of retirement after 6 years and losing about 80 lbs which no doubt left him nowhere as strong of a fighter as he had previously been for one thing. He was pretty quick for a big man 6'2 1/2" and about 220 lbs and fought with a crouching style able to absorb great punishment and also able to dish out great punishment having great stamina. George Foreman Won: 76 Lost: 5 Draws: 0 Kayo's: 68 World Heavyweight Champ from 1973-74 and 1994. Total of 2 title defenses. Best wins over Joe Frazier (2) Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, George Chuvalo and Michael Moorer. Early in his career the big 6'3 1/2" 217 lb Foreman was a monster and a dangerous fighter indeed for any man that was crazy enough to come straight at him. When he hit you it was like being hit with a baseball bat. His major weakness was his stamina as he could get tired and would sometimes punch himself out. The later version fo Foreman was much better at pacing himself. The fight (Jeffries vs younger version) Foreman would come out strong with Jeffries holding his own as both men exchange hard shots. Jeffries withstands an early battering and remains on his feet. By the 7th round Jeffires starts to come back but has already absorbed punishment like never before as his eyes are closing. He is game and strong and though Foreman does get tired, he continues battering Jeffries until the referee stops the fight and raises Foreman's hand. Foreman by 8th round TKO. The fight (older version of Foreman) Foreman is still dangerous but not as much as the younger version) and uses his jab more and paces himself. Jeffries would land some good shots in what would have been a very close fight. Jeffries would open up on big George late in the fight and even stagger him a few times but Foreman who also had an iron chin would hang on. I really believe the younger and stronger Jeffries would have done enough to win a close fight. Jeffries by SD15.

Actually at the time this was percieved as a safe fight. Moorer just became a title holder...Foreman was old (45yrs old). I think he expected to dominate the old Foreman and put a big name on his resume. Lennox was considered a much more dangerous fight. Little did he and Atlas knnow...

Probably thought George Foreman would be a big money maker and be a safe fight for Moore. Moore's camp made the mistake by playing into the belief that George Foreman was old & fat when in fact they played right into george's game.... Watch that overhead replay shot of George's straight right hand Ko'ing Moore and then come back & say George cant knock you out with one punch.... That was a vicous punch that came out of nowhere....They over estimated George big time...

Maybe they thought this was a safe payday.

Foreman had lost a decision to Holyfield.

Usually a fighter looks for a safe payday, until he is forced to fight a tough opponent.
