Roy Jones jr had a very exciting boxing style and was one of the most recognisable boxers in the world in his prime..but he never came close to earning the fight purses that boxing greats Mike Tyson or Floyd Mayweather jr earned..

Roy jones jr biggest fight purse was $22 million..which he earned for the Ruiz fight..other than that his purses have mainly ranged between $10 million to $12 million....compared to Tyson or Floyd who both earned more than $30 million for several of their fights!

why didnt Roy Jones jr ever earn the Tyson or Mayweather jr money?

Probably because he didn't fight the best around. If he'd fought the best he would have earned more.

1 - Muhammad Ali. Ali's skill and boxing ability was something from the future. Even now boxers can only dream of being able to do half the things the Greatest could do with ease. How many light punching heavyweights could have fun with killers like a prime Sonny Liston, Cleveland Williams, George Foreman, and Earnie Shavers? There was never anything like Ali before and there never will be again. Muhammad is like halleys comet, a once in a lifetime spectacular, pure brilliance. Ali defied logic, even when his speed slowed, his ability to take a punch was phenominal. 2 - Floyd Mayweather is second, his speed and reflexes are amazing, and to pick up 5 world titles at 5 weight divisions and to be undefeated in doing so, will never be done again. 3 - Roy Jones jr comes in third in my view! While Jones is recognised as the greatest fighter of the 90s, that is un-debatable, but I (and it's ONLY my opinion) don't class Roy as a genuine 4 weight champion. He was definitely No1 at Middleweight, supermiddleweight, and light heavyweight, he was not the recognised heavyweight champion, Lennox Lewis was, and the WBA world title was taken from Lewis in the courts, given to Evander Holyfield, who lost to John Ruiz who in turn lost to Jones. Lennox Lewis was the UNDISPUTED champion. 4 - Tyson comes in last in my opinion. From 86 - 90 Tyson seemed invincible, but looking back on his record he fought and beat has-beens and former champs. Then during the 90's, when fighters wasn't frightened of him, Tyson was exposed as a fighter who depended purely on a one punch knockout, his boxing skill was very limited!

You actually answered your own question. Mike Tyson( and the very good heavyweight division of the 90s) overshadowed Roy Jones( and the other weight division) Fact be told, heavyweight is the prestige division of boxing, the division that brings fans to the sport, and Roy Jones Jr. as great as he was, often fought under qualified opponents. There was a saying that when people heard who RJJ's opponent was, they went huh, and yeah, there are allot of no hopers on his record. Also, promotion, he didn't have any of the major promoters, he did it himself, so there was tha

If we knew the answer to this question, we would be promoting fighters. Roy was his own promoter, he never signed with the top dogs of his day (Arum or King) so I guess the only thing missing from the equation is Don King. King's waning influence in boxing must have opened the door for Floyd and Don must have closed it for Roy. Arum is still in the picture, but with the onset of Golden Boy and their work with Floyd's promotional company, I guess we are entering a new era of boxing promotions.

Floyd has made his self the villain and he is a winner Tyson was great and he had Don King the greatest promoter of all time.Roy had him self so when you really look at Roy made as much because he did not have to pay anyone else.
