Hearns best punch?
2008-02-09 10:37:22 UTC
Though Hearns didnt knock him out with the punch,I rate his right hand cross which floored Denis Andries in 1987 in round 6 as better than the punch which ko'd Durhan, many heavyweights wouhld have gone down with that punch......and stayed down, what do you think??

I rememeber that fight in Detroit at Joe Louis Arena. Dropped Andries right on his butt and what a shot it was! Didn't he knock him down 7 times or something in that fight? I know the referee needed banned after that one. Thomas Hearns is a Hall Of Fame bound fighter who carried tremendous speed and power from welterweight all the way to cruiserweight! How many fighters in history can say that? And his straight right was one of THE greatest weapons in boxing history. He flattened Cuevas and Duran with that same punch. If Hearns had a better chin he would be top 5 all time, because he would have never lost to Leonard or Hagler had his chin held up. I loved every fight he was in because his speed and power were incredible and u knew if he landed that right it was goodnight!

Hearns was a beautiful boxer with a lot of power. He also knew how to THROW an punch better than most, thus getting the MOST of the power he had. Imagine if George Forman actually knew how to USE his power when he was in his prime.

The right hand Hearns hit Andries with was indeed a better "Looking'' punch because it hit him straight. Andreies was more cooperative than Duran, who was still moving his head in an attempt to avoid being hit, until Hearns Polaxed him. Andries was standing almost straight when Hearns hit him. You dont see better punches on paper.

The right he hit Duran with was certainly more destructive. You could actually Hear the punch land and see Duran's body go numb as he fell face first to the canvas, In he same pose he was in when the blow connected.

No question that was the better punch in terms of effectiveness. Usually, when a fighter falls face first, he's not getting up. The other thing to consider is that, even though he was past his prime and well above his best weight, Duran was a better Jr. Middleweight than Andries was a Light Heavyweight.

Not many from Welter to Lt. Heavy could punch like Hearns.

Thumbs up to Peter H & Aceman. Three of Hearns's best punches were Duran, Cuevas and Dennis Andreis, and truth be told any of the three would be career defining shot to any normal fighter. I really can't choose between them they were all spectacular. I consider Thomas Hearns the hardest hitting welterweight of all time, incredibly high praise considering the greats that fought at 147. When you take into account Duran was one of boxing's immortals and Andreis was at 175, a full 30 lbs. heavier than Hearns's best weight, it is still very difficult to chose. As highlight reels go, the Cuevas KO is still looked at with awe by young boxers 25 years later.

If it wasn't such a cop out I would call it a three way draw and be done with it, but for posterity I have to go with the Duran KO. Stature wise Duran was the toughest of the three by far, and waxing an all time great with that kind of authority doesn't happen very often ever. I was amazed Roberto came out for another round, it was pure instinct, and both he and Cuevas were made of sterner stuff than I, that's for sure.

I watched that one live on the telly. I saw the shot and when Andries went down, I knew it was over. Couldn't believe DA got up from that, and couldn't believe the ref let the fight go on. That was the 2nd sickest punch anyone ever got up from.

It's hard to rate that punch, or the ones against Shuler, Duran or Cuevas as his best shot. They were just so devastating. It's safe to say that Hearns had great KO power at light heavy, and had the same power at 147. The poor welters were overmatched.

Tommy "Hit Man" Hearns had enormous power in both hands, but particularly in his right hand. In his welterweight championship fight with Pipino Cuevas, he hit him with a right hand that made him wobble before going down and Cuevas had a reputation of having an iron chin. The right hand he hit Duran with knocked him out cold and I don't believe that happened to Duran either before or since. Hearns had that tall lanky frame and when he threw that right hand bomb of his, it carried a lot of leverage and yes it probably would have even knocked out a few much larger fighters. Keep in mind that former light heavyweight champion Bob Foster also had a dynamite right hand that left many opponents out cold on the canvas but when he hit Joe Frazier with it had little effect really but Joe was really tough. But back to your question, Hearns did indeed have a right hand that could knock out a horse!

there is no actual thanks to inform. except you get Emanuel Stewarts blessing (which will by no skill ensue) that Pavlik hits more suitable sturdy or have a time device and a foul sap waiting to acquire punches from both Kelly and Thomas. there is no actual thanks to inform except the heritage that change into recorded up until eventually this factor. considering the fact that there is more suitable heritage on Hearns on the on the spot i ought to ought to assert the Hitman is the superior of both. both had a tough time struggling with and beating sturdy willed combatants. Pavlik with Hopkins and Hearns with Ray Leonard and Hagler. the following is going. Kelly looks to have the bigger, heavier hand, so i ought to %. Kelly as having the superior hand. there is no actual thanks to work out who hits more suitable sturdy. See my paragraph earlier answering those questions. Going fifteen rounds ought to rely what weight yet Kelly does have a more suitable suited chin. often if Thomas change into damage he ought to no longer recuperate. i ought to ought to %. Pavlik.ought to win a wrestle that is going no the position close to that length.

The shot he dropped Duran with was one of the best punches ever thrown. Duran had never been KOd and never really was after that - though he fought for another 25+ years.

Thought the right hand to Duran was a pretty good indication of his power, also Pepino Cuevas didn't look too good either.

weak legs and a dodgy chin. He always came second to the 'complete fighters' like Leonard and Hagler. Duran was made for him though. Wonderful era... still miss it.
