This would have been a classic, thrill a minute fight while it lasted. The consummate defensive fighter vs the consummate offensive. Wilfred doesn't have the power to keep Aaron off of him, but he does make him miss more than he lands for the first few rounds and counters brilliantly, bringing the crowd to their feet. But Pryor is a hurricane and keeps coming.

By the mid rounds Pryor is landing with more frequency and Wilfred doesn't like it. At heart he is still a tough, prideful Puerto Rican kid who isn't going to allow himself to be intimidated by anyone. Pryor is showing him no respect so Benitez begins fighting Pryor's fight, digging his heels in and landing hard shots, at times even backing Aaron up. The audience goes nuts but "The Hawk" is undaunted and plows forward, relishing the toe-to-toe action.

By the 9nth round the torrid pace is beginning to show on Benitez as he realizes that his only hope for winning is to revert back to his defensive wizardry. But it is too late. Pryor is still throwing upwards of 100 punches per round, more than Benitez can slip and dodge. His once-sharp counters begin to lose their snap and Pryor staggers him in the 11th.

A weary Benitez rises from his stool for the 13th round and is met by a fusillade from Pryor, who backs him into the ropes. Benitez trades bravely but he is badly outgunned. The Hawk buries him under an avalanche of leather and Wilfred is sinking to the canvas when the ref intervenes.

As slick a boxer as Benitez was, Pryor was relentless and if he could beat down Alexis Arguello, I think Wilfred would suffer a similar fate. I think the biggest problem (pun intended) would have been the size advantage for Benitez, Wilfred was a bigger man than Arguello and that might have meant Benitez had a better chin. Wilfred was a little more mobile and had good lateral movement, quite possibly better than Arguello as well, but I still don't see Benitez avoiding a slugfest.

Pryor was a master at cutting off the ring, had arguably the best chin of any little guy and was as good a pressure fighter as history ever produced. Benitez may have won a title at 17 but he couldn't have beat Aaron Pryor that young.

Pryor would have reproduced Arguello's distruction of Mancini and KOed Benitez if they met in Benitez's youth.

super combat. using fact he's seen a protecting genius, people often forget approximately that Benitez truly does not use plenty foot paintings. that is what might fee him in this combat. i think of of ways a Pryor-Leonard combat could have panned out. the variation is that Leonard had extra hearth capability than Benitez had, fairly till now Benitez moved to 154. i do no longer think of Benitez might have executed nicely against Pryor at a hundred and forty. the undeniable fact that he truly more desirable capability at 154 is info that he became nevertheless arising at a hundred and forty. He became basically a boy whilst he won the identify there. he's super and intensely confusing to hit yet Pryor might have compelled him and delivered him thoroughly out of his interest. think of of Benitez' middleweight combat with Mustufa Hamsho. optimistic, Hamsho isn't any Pryor and nowhere close to Benitez' point in capability. in spite of the undeniable fact that, that is how he beat Benitez. He utilized super rigidity and on no account enable up. additionally, at a hundred and forty, Pryor became a grown guy. whilst he compiled a great checklist at a hundred and forty, and at this type of youthful age, Benitez became nevertheless a boy. Pryor by way of TKO in 12

Aaron Pryor is relentless. Did Wilfred Benitez lost to anyone with a relentless style? Mustafa Hamsho come to mind, Mustafa decision Wilfred at middleweight so I think Aaron will do the same to Wilfred at welterweight...
