It's a tie...Rocky Marciano and Larry Holmes. Anybody who would put Clay/Ali is uninformed and ridiculous. Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, and Leon Spinks made Muhammad Ali in his prime look like the Muhammad Ali of today. And Holmes basically pounded his *** unmercifully. Just because you have a big mouth and tell people you're the greatest, it doesn't mean you are. I even recall seeing Marciano outclass and beat Ali/Clay when I was a wee lad in some movie.

Rocky NEVER lost to anyone. EVER!

Horoable mention: George Foreman. When he KO'ed Moorer in his mid-40's he proved something nobody else believed he could do.

A few thoughts:

1) I agree -- Ali was WAY past his prime when he fought Holmes. To say he was in his prime is ludicrous. He was an old, overweight man making an ill-advised comeback.

2) While Larry Holmes is not even one of the 5 greatest heavyweight champions, he deserves a ton of respect because he fought all takers. He had all-out wars with Michael Spinx, who Mike Tyson destroyed. Larry Holmes was not even as good as Tyson, and Tyson is not in the top 5 either. He should have been, but ruined his career. You can't just ignore everything the guy has done since his early 20s.

3) Ali was the most entertaining heavyweight ever. But Joe Louis hit very hard and was very agile. It's hard to imagine Ali beating Louis, when Louis was in his prime. Some of the guys Ali lost to wouldn't have gone three rounds with Louis.

I'm voting for Joe Louis. The guy was just a monster.

And let me say this -- the most under-respected champ ever is Lennox Lewis. He was just dominant at times.

a lot of human beings might say Ali. i've got faith that there are countless best suited Champions. each and each out of a distinctive time. a million. Joe Louis 2. Rocky Marciano 3. Ali in basic terms a observe.... Marciano replaced into the only Champion in history to retire undefeated. Who might win against eachother is a secret.

Joe Louis held the title for 12 years. I think that's good for something.
