These two were on a collision course until Sugar Ray was diagnosed with the detached Retina following, his title defense against Bruce Finch, in 1982. Curry has come off of his title unification win over WBA Welterweight Champion Milton McCrory, by a KO 2, in 1985. Who would win and Why?

Great match up Irene! Donald Curry was a very skilled fighter with excellent hand speed and power. His one weakness was his chin which let him down a few times in big time fights. Sugar Ray Leonard was an Olympic hero with his charm and charisma but he was als a brilliant fighter with blazing hand speed and the ability to adopt in big time fights. With both of these guys truly at their best, it would have been agreat fight and perhaps even a close and exciting fight too. Here's a breakdown of each fighter:

Donald Curry

Won: 34

Lost: 6

Draws: 0

KO's: 25

Best wins: UD15 Marlon Starling, SD12 Marlon Starling, TKO6 Nino La Rocca, KO2 Milton McCrory

Sugar Ray Leonard

Won: 36

Lost: 3

Draws: 1

KO's: 25

Best wins: TKO15 Wilfred Benitez, TKO8 Roberto Duran, W12 Roberto Duran, TKO14 Thomas Hearns, W12 Marin Hagler

The Fight

The crowd is buzzing with excitement in anticipation of this big time fight. Curry starts off well being the aggressor and wins the first two rounds. The 3rd round is Leonard's as he shows off his superior combo punching skills. Cury comes back and does well in rounds 4 and 5 but Leonard is landing the more effective punches and by round 8 it is clear that Curry is fading and Leonard is coming on strong. In round 10 Leonard sends Curry down with a blistering combination. Curry gets to his feet at the count of 9 but Leonard is a great finisher and throws everything but the kitchen sink looking to finish Curry as the refereee steps in and halts the proceedings.

Leonard was a better fighter than Curry and as long as he could avoid a big right hand he would win this fight.

The Leonard that lost a decision to Duran could certainly lose to Curry, so it is possible, but I would still bet on Leonard.

Sugar Ray Leonard was definitely an all time great, especially at welterweight! Bernard Hopkins is also an all time great and that is starting at middleweight. When it comes right down to it Leonard at his best was just too small for Hopkins at his best. As slick as leonard was he might be lucky enough to last 12 rounds. I wouldn't be surprised if Hopkins stopped him inside of 12, but either way Hopkins wins easy!

Leonard by late round KO or stoppage over Curry in a closely fought 12 round match after exhibiting greatert resiliency and toughness down the stretch.

I really like Don Curry, I really do. Curry was a boxer-puncher, knew how to fight on the inside, and was a tru champion. But SRL is one of the smartest boxers to ever exist, one of my favorite boxers, incredible smart, had impressive foot movement, and knew how to handle punchers, and has a history of beating them with ease. SRL by decision or 11 rd KO

I believe KO magazine did this "dream fight" years ago. SRL by UD, but he is outboxed for a few rounds, evens things up with a flash knockdown, then takes the last 3 rounds. (15 round fight)
